how much fun Old Forge can be in the winter!!!!! Surgeon Generals Warning: This video may cause rapid heart beat and adrenaline rush. If it doesn’t (get your heart beating just a little faster) you better stay home because you are DEAD!
We have 5″ of the white stuff on the ground and the long range forecast is calling for snow and cold temps. Looks like 0 for us tommorrow night and again later on in the week with snow most days. Check back later on today……as I have something that will get you ready for the upcoming season!
When it snows has a big impact on the road conditions.
I always laugh to myself when someone comes into the office and bitches at me that the highway dept. is plowing the roads different than they did before. This will be my 19th season here in Old Forge and the TOW Highway Dept. really hasn’t changed much of anything on the way they plow the roads. Heck I don’t think they have even changed the routes they take each trip. As a matter of fact one of the trucks is of the 80’s vintage and one of the plows is from the 70’s. So not much has changed and even the newer equipment isn’t much different than the older stuff.
Last night I went up to McCauley Mountain right after it had stopped snowing and I was back up there this morning after they had plowed. I felt like little Billy in Family Circle (Sunday paper cartoon) as I was able to see the path I took on the way up and back. Because I was the only one that had gone down the road and my tires had packed down the snow and the plow wasn’t able to scrape it up. The same as when you walk on your sidewalk and then try to shovel it off. You are able to see your foot steps. So when it snows all night and the highway starts plowing at 4 am allot of the snow comes up. But if it is snowing during the day and people are out driving/packing the snow down makes a BIG difference in the build up on the roads.
The 10 day forecast is calling for teens and some single digit temps at night. A cold front came in tonight and dropped a fast 2 1/2 inches of the white stuff on the area. It’s the good stuff that packs down nice and hard. Who knows this could be the beginning of our base for the season. Let’s hope!!!!
If you check out the cam from the top of McCauley you will see that parts of first and second have ice on them. In the distance is fourth and that hasn’t started yet. We dropped down to zero last night and we are in the mid twenties this afternoon. Hope everyone enjoyed their turkey sandwich for lunch today…..I did!
Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving!!! Winter has returned to the area yesterday with a thin coating of ice at first and then light snow. Right now we have snow in the air and the state plow truck just went past salting. If you are looking for something to get you in the Christmas spirit we have Christmas on Main Street here in Old Forge this weekend. With the cold temps and snow what more could you ask for to kick off the winter/holiday season. Here is a little more info on this great weekend event……

This morning we woke up to ice! There was a light coating here in town and it sounds like it was heaver out of town. The temps did go up above freezing pretty fast so it didn’t stick around long. Forecast is looking for the R word and then snow towards the end of the week.
The temp dropped down into the teens this morning and we woke up to a crisp winter scene. We have 2 to 3 inches on the ground and bright sunny skies. For the rest of the week it looks like the temps will be down in the teens most mornings. Good weather for cooling down the lakes and making ice.
