Old Forge Trail Report

OK Boys and Girls it’s a new day and a new report.  It has been covered enough that the trails didn’t get groomed this past weekend and that many people feel the roads don’t need to be plowed as much as they are.  I will personally pass the word on to the powers to be.  With that said let’s get get back to the matter at hand and the purpose of this blog…..the trails…..not to itch.  (Not a typo….little eyes may be watching)  Went out last night and put on 65 miles.  Most trails I found to be in good shape with some fairs and one poor.  When we got to Beaver River I’m thinking to myself these guys are going to kill me for taking them on that trail. (not the tracks) When we got there they said that wasn’t to bad.  I’m like what??????  That one trail was poor plus and they said we have seen it worse.  But then it’s all in the beholders eye…..go figure.  Here’s todays video…….

  4. Morning Jack,

Not time for me yet. But that is one of the nice things about living here. We might get that one last dump that you have to be here to enjoy it as it comes.

On another note. If anyone has the full scoop on the ethonol gas crap and what is the best method to put them away for the summer. It would be great to post it or a link so no one has a headache in the fall. I’m hearing alot of stuff on it messing up chain saws and such.

  5. steve, done the late season rides, my buddy has a house on joy tract right up the hill from green brigde, but he got married qiut sledding, house sits empty and for sale, but getting back to the late season ride I put my sled in 4th lake getting off at the marina in Eagle Bay, water up to my neck, sled under water, but all was well guys from marina threw rope out to pull sled in,as for the ethenol thing I just put stabil in gas and run sled a few times over the summer and suck gas out for mowers and then add new gas to sleds

  6. Steve,

For dealing with Ethanol additive in the gas—Add stabil and run the engine for a few minutes to get it thru the engine. You should be fine. Also fill the tank. I’ve been dealing with the ethanol crap for a few years now in my boat. No problems. Same with my lawn mowers, sleds etc..

During the season, its also a good idea to add Startron gas treatment every other tank fill up.

  7. Jack, did you go in at Clark’s marina? holy cr*p, glad you’re okay. I guess this was the earliest year we rode the lakes, so it’ll end the soonest too.

On a seperate note, planning ahead for next year- does anyone know the deal if a 9 yr 11month old can sit in on the class for a permit, or do they have to be 10? Our son took the class 2 years ago and was 10 ahead of time. Our daugter won’t be 10 until end of Feb and courses are usually in Dec and Jan. The sites I’ve been on don’t get that specific. Any info would be appreciated!

  11. Hi Yammadog,

I think you missed typed when telling Steve about the Ethanol…..yes you should put stablizer in tank and run gas OUT. If you fill the tank with stablizer, these days stabliizer is only good for 60 days and you will have bad gas if you leave a full tank with stabilizer for 6+ months…..so run stabilizer through tank and then drain tank so it sits empty/dry over the summer. And yes with each fill up, during the snow season, use I believe 2 onces of Starton additive…you can buy it at Walmat for about $8 a bottle (16 oz I think).

  15. WEDNESDAY 5:04pm

My girl and I are heading out tonight around 7:30PM to ride around the inner trails and then over to Slicker’s for some wings :)

Thinking about heading to Tug Hill tomorrow or Friday AM since the temps are dropping into the low teens (finally) and I’m sure there’s like no traffic. Any suggestions on route or other places to go that are holding up? Is the 10 mile crossing and road in Brantingham ridable? Stoney Lake trail??

    Thanks, Tim

  16. the lakes were really slushy last weekend. e.g. big moose lake, where they plow for the races was just slush & puddles (sippy holes as my hubby referred to them). i always check with our friends that fish on the lakes, but it’s still unnerving to me when your sled slows down - even if there’s solid ice under the slush…

And thanks for the info Brenda, I’ll be signing her up in Dec 2010 or Jan 2011… she’ll have such fun on the Snow Sport! I’ll finally be free of the clanging helmets! (at least for the short rides) woo hoo

  17. tim call pine tree inn (315) 348-6040 they might steer you in the right direction but i think the roads will be tough going

  18. You should put startron in everytime you fill up, You can either empty the tank or fill it up. Startron will keep you gas fresh over the summer. I use it in my boat motors every fill up. The marine mechanics recommend using it .Ethanol burns hotter which could burn a hole in the piston.

  20. Forget it - it’s all over unless you trailer down to the end of North Street (this is a must) and then plan to ride bumpy hard pack at night or mush in the day…….
