Yes…People do look at the webcam!

Here is an email I recieved the other day and my reply to it.  I got a laugh out of it…..thought you might also.

 Hi,

Don’t laugh - my husband and I LOVE to check your webcam all the time, and believe me, after vicariously visiting your porch for all this time, if we are EVER in the area, we will DEFINITELY stay at your motel!  But here’s the thing…we are wondering what happened to the black BBQ grill thing?  We get a kick out of watching it move around the yard over time….but now it’s GONE!  LOL!  Is it coming back?  Did you get rid of it?  We are just dying to know what happened to the BBQ!  Last we saw it, it was by the sidewalk, and poof!  We miss it, LOL!

Anyway, we love your webcam - thanks for having it up and letting us visit the ADKs whenever we want.  Hope the BBQ is ok!

Carole :-D

My Reply:

Good Morning Carole,

Well I have to tell you….I did laugh and hard!!!!  I was looking at it the other day and decided it was time for it to retired from commercial use.  As the top lid wasn’t looking to pretty any more after the mini van ran over it last summer and was an eye sore when guests pulled in.  The top lid and screen went in the metal bin to be recycled and the bottom went to a private house, with small children, to be used as a fire pit for I hope a few more years.  There will be a new fire pit returning to the front yard, as it is a hit with the guests here at Christy’s.

Thanks for watching the cam here at the motel.  I’m sure you know about them but here is a link to some other cams I have running here in Old Forge www.oldforge.net

On another note…..is it OK if I post your letter on my blog.  I think people would also get a laugh from it as you wouldn’t believe how many people watch the cams from all over the world.  This winter I put up a cam on the snowmobile trails and posted to the public on Christmas Day as a present to all the watchers.  I had a man post this on the blog about the trail cam.

Steve –TKS for the present –I wish you and yours a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and HOPE that the new year brings a safe and Happy Time for all !! —-Love the new cam !! I forward the cam address to my son in Afghanistan –this will keep him in good spirits until he gets home and has a chance to ride his sled again !! He has been dying to ride !!

I get goose bumps every time I read his letter and I realized how something as little as a webcam can be so big to someone else.  I have had seniors write and tell me how much they enjoy them as they came to the Adirondacks in their younger years but are not able to travel any more.

Thanks Again,

Steve

  1. Greeting from the tropics. I enjoyed the back and forth today. The Weber has been my reference point for some time to check out how deep the snow is. I’m an expat from O.F. Graduated from TOWH in way way way back in ‘57. My family (the MacFeggans) built an operated the old Ferns. Now Walts Diner, I think. We get to visit OF every few years just for nostalgia. Helen Holl Estabrook, Linda Smith Kellog, Bob Liddle and Linda Cohen are friends and contemporaries. We can’t shed our small town ways, we now live on Big Pine Key,a small community of just a few k persons. We’re just a few miles from Key West. Our deer are tiny, an adult doe is only slightly more than hip high on me. I take a look at the old home town nearly every day. First the CoC cams, then you…..keep up the great pics…Best…Walt LaGraves

  2. Walt, I agree with you…all these cams make my day. Unlike you, I’m not from the Mts., but Rochester, NY, relocated to Las Vegas. I visited the mountains every year of my life(over 50 years)until 2003 and have only missed a couple of years since then. Our parents drove us up there long before there was a thruway. The first place we stayed was Barrett’s Bald Mountain House, and I can remember going to the dock to catch the mailboat and looking at the forested shoreline. The Ferns was our “favoritest” restaurant, and I will always remember how you would dress up to go there. When I became a teenager earning money, the first place I every took my parents out to dinner was the Ferns! I still possess several items that I purchased way back then at the Ferns’ Giftshop! What a great place…

Happy Mother’s Day to all. Can’t believe you woke up to snow! And Steve, thanks for making my day, every day!
